A 4 to 5" layer springing from the side insulation blocks covering the whole arch. It was an ideal day for doing the job, warm and sunny which made the mixing and spreading the 2 tons of mix slightly more enjoyable. Now just waiting for the metalwork to be completed and I can then bolt and cement it in place.

I'm now well into making work for the first firing. Any gaps between the hot face bricks and the tops of the insulation bricks have been filled with sand in preparation for the insulation layer to be laid which will be happening with the help of Rob and Alex, 2 of our 3D final year students on Wednesday. The insulation mix will be roughly :

6 parts Sand
1pts fireclay
1pt Portland cement
1 pt lime
4pts cotton fibres
5litres Pearlite

Behind the scenes with many thanks to Chris and Pete the large RSJ which I plan to use as the uprights for the exterior bracing has been cut in half and has been marked up for cutting and drilling also next week, these can then be bolted to the ground and secured to the wall and the large horizontal brace bolted into place.

Another pallet of straights has been ordered for the floor, grate and door as well, so hopefully by the end of next week externally the kiln will be complete with just the secondary floor to lay. Early on, any gaps between bricks such as the chimney base were packed with castable along with any joints in the secondary arch. It was then time to get on with cementing the insulation blocks into place. These are ultra low density blocks which are able to take the heat from the fire brick wall as well as offer a good insulatory layer along the sides of the chamber. A bit fiddly on the wall side as it's quite narrow. Having completed that and the cement aloud to cure, the gap between the insulation blocks on the kiln and the yard wall was filled with concrete blocks and old bricks to butress that side of the kiln.

It was then time to build up the chimney, despite an aptitude for dropping my trowl down it, it went up reasonably quickly, managing to lay about 4 courses each hour which doesn't sound much but there was also a lot of brick moving and cutting of small 1inch bits as spacers, 2 or 3 per course. I still need to add a few more courses, it's standing at about 11.5 feet at the moment and I reckon it needs another foot.

I also put in a flame viewing hole / passive damper in the front of the chimny, bit of a narrow gap as the main chamber insulation will be built up level with the top of the blow hole pipe. The next major job will be to get the main insulation layer done, this will be a mixture of sand, lime, perlite, sawdust, straw and cement and lots and lots and lots of shoveling; whooooop.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Unfortunately the weather has finally had a impact on the build. After snow last weekend the yard has been completely frozen up. The insulation blocks for the sides have now arrived and I was hoping to start on the insulation of the arch this week but the old insulation sand and pearlite mix has been frozen solid all week so I'll have to wait until it thaws before that job can be started. Also, the fireclay mortar between the secondary arch bricks is frozen so ramming and filling those gaps again, will have to wait until it defrosts a little. The other outstanding job is taking the chimney out through the roof which again has been put on hold until the ice on the roof has melted. Hopefully the firebricks for the floor, grate and door will be arriving soon so that is another job on the list.

Roll on the spring :-)

Most of the heavy brickwork completed :-)

Well, it's been a very cold week here, the temperature in the yard has not got much above freezing for most of it so loads of clothes have been in order. The space looks great and the rest of the day was spent clearing away excess mortar from the internal hot face and mixing up the refractory castable and packing all the supporting gaps inside.

Due to the cold and not wanting to compramise the curing of the castable, all the cast areas had to be covered with fibre and a small heater was put in the kiln over night to stop it all from freezing.

On Thursday and Friday Steve Parry again was over to help with the build of the secondary arch. Great help and much appreciated.

Despite having to regularly defrost our buckets of mortar we managed at five PM on Friday to knock into place the last key brick. Very satisfying. So, most of the heavy brick work is done. Jobs left to do? Pack any gaps between the secondary arch bricks, complete the chimney, Lay the insulation blocks along the sides, mix and lay the insulation mix on the top, lay the second floor layer and finally sort out and fit the metal bracing on the outside wall. Plenty still left to do but this week was definitely a turning point.

On adifferent note, I'm starting to put together shows and exhibitions for 2012 and these can be seen on my website information page, hope to see you there :-)

It got cold!

Another productive week last week, managed to spend a good couple of days working on the kiln. Finished off keying in the back of the arch which involved plenty of niggly cutting of bricks in order to get them all tight and supported both in the arch itself and also into the front wall of the chimney. Once that had been completed, I began building up the chimney. Raising up the collection box at the base several more layers before beginning to corble in to the final dimensions (somewhere there must be a natural law which dictates that the chimney dimensions will never quite match the dimensions of whole bricks, each layer required two small cut sections to be inserted which made each course slow: this is also directly proportional to the number of times the builder will hit their head on the roof :-( ). I took the chimney up to just below the board which covers the hole in the roof and will leave it there until the rest of the kiln is finished to keep the rain out.

Once finished, I addressed finishing the main arch structure. This involves cleaning off all the excess fireclay mortar and ramming the gaps with dry fireclay using a small wooden wedge. This ensures that all the arch bricks are compressed together. A time consuming and tedious job although very important for the final integrity of the arch, it took me five hours just to do half of one side of the structure.

So, for this week I have to finish ramming the arch and mix up some refactory castable to fill some voids at the base of the chimney as well as around the blow hole tubes in the top of the arch and then the job of laying the secondary arch can begin. Plenty of clothes on as it's set to get even colder. I'll then brick back out forward and back to tie the arch into the door arch and into the bottom of the chimney.

I'm hoping that this week we should be able to get most of the key bricks cut and in place. There are also about 15 dense concrete hollows to carry to the other side of the kiln for buttressing before the chimney gets too high. The outside of the whole hot face arch will then need to be dry rammed with fireclay in preparation for the secondary arch to be laid. It's finally starting to take shape.

A cold day weaving the arch former

Probably the last real bit of work to be done on the kiln before a short seasonal break. A bleak cold sleaty day to be doing this so plenty of hot tea to keep my fingers warm as I've been tying lots and lots of knots to secure the laths. The vertical walls are now at the right height for the arch to spring off and the lower passive damper as well as the middle grate fire mouth are also in place. I'v also put a small side stoke port adjacent to the main fire box. This morning I have positioned the front door arch and removed the former. The rear flues are now all in place and the wall above is ready to receive the back end of the arch. All in all it's starting to feel like a kiln. I just have some fiddly spacer bricks to cut with the angle grinder to finish the last course of bricks as the kiln tapers into the flues and then ready to start making the arch formers. I've added images most recent at the top this time. If you're wondering why a lot of the images seem to be in the dark it's due to me recording progress at the end of each day and at 5pm it's pretty pitch.

Loughborough kiln update

I had a productive week last week being able to spend 2 days pretty much dedicated to working on the kiln. The fire brick floor has been laid lining both fire boxes creating the base from which the vertical walls can be built and the structure can begin to look like a kiln rather than a random pile of building materials. All the measurements and calculations have been made and laid out with respect to the firebox / chamber dimensions / flue and chimney dimensions and this week will be building up the side walls in preparation for the start of the arch.

From this point the walls are started, using a fireclay and water slurry with a little sodium silicate added for spreadability as a bedding motar. Small expansion gaps are also left on every course also to facilitate the kilns movement when heated. I have also taken down the old anagama kiln there and started rebuilding the new one. I managed to salvage most of the materials from the old kiln. The only parts which were beyond redemption were the hot face firebox bricks and the area around the flues at the back of the kiln. Everything else was put on pallets and transported to the new larger kiln site. Only about 200m away but in a new yard. The stage I am at is just grunt work. Bedding and leveling 160 dense concrete hollows to form the kiln platform and I have now started to lay the firebrick floor, although i've just run out of fireclay to make the bedding mortar (surpisingly tricky to get hold of in powder form), so i'll be a little delayed waiting for that to arrive. I've been documenting the new build after each day and I've selected a few to post here. As the kiln progresses I'll post updates. I'm hoping to get the kiln finished mid February ready to fire in the spring.

These are the rough plans which I drew up several years ago when planning. Some of the details of stepping and area dimensions are altering slightly as I lay the blocks and the rear of the kiln will be more like the side elevation image with the back of the chamber tying into the base of the chimney above the exit flues rather than an elongated flue running to the chimney. But you'll get the idea hopefully.

And so, the first blocks!

This image shows the general lay out of the new kiln. Grated firebox extending deeper into the body of the kiln than in the previous kiln with stacking space around the sides. The 1st level packing will be at the same level as the grate and will allow coals to mingle with the work as well as giving good space for shelf stacking behind. There is then a step up to another shelf stackable area and behind this is the block channel for the side stoke grate and ash pit. behind that will be another small step up and another shelf stackable zone in front of the flues.

This picture is the most recent. Bag is also packed, and a good breakfast shared with my daughter of cheese on toast and eggy bread inside me. Off up to Potfest in the Park at Hutton in the Forest near Penrith in Cumbria this morning. Looking forward to spending four days at this beautiful place showing my pots. Back home on Sunday night and back off down to Art in Clay at Hatfield House next Thursday. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks!! The van is unpacked again and I've been preparing the stand for Potfest in the Park at Hutton in the Forest, Cumbira. Due to a bit of rain at Rufford I've had to repaint the whole stand and it's now ready to go. I also sent out some fresh work to the SCA gallery in Shrewsbury. Last week I spent a couple of days (aided by Jo Bird and Steve Parry), getting a firings worth of fuel down to the kiln at Wysing Arts Centre. I'm still aiming to fire this kiln in November some time but haven't fixed a date yet. The priority was to get the wood down there, cross stack and cover it all so that it dries. Steve also gave the inside of the kiln a good clean out. Suprisingly the undergrowth wasn't too rampant and the walnut tree that has been growing behin the kiln (from a sapling when we started), is now huge and covered with what promises to be a bumper crop of nuts. We'll have to come up with some recipes for a bit of kiln cooking in the autumn.

We cheated slightly with the hard wood slats. As it was getting late in the day and we didn't fancy hand balling it all round to the other side of the kiln, we constructed a rather ingenious track out of ladders which allowed us to slide the bundles out of the van and stack them on top of each other. These were then covered with tin. The hard wood slats that I use are so dense that even if a bit of rain gets in it won't make a great deal of difference. So onwards to Potfest in the Park followed the following week by Art in Clay at Hatfield House.

Preparation, preparation.

Only a week to go now until the first show of the summer. Earth and Fire at Rufford country park. I always enjoy showing at Rufford, great atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. I've selected the work and the stand has all been painted and made ready. I'm showing predominantly new work over the summer, that which has come out of the last two firings; using my course clay with shino and titanium ash glaze. I've spent the last couple of days stacking kiln bricks onto palletts ready to move to the new kiln site. I'll start taking down the old kiln at the end of September and hopefully will have the new kiln built and ready to fire by late Spring. In the mean time I've started planning a firing in the Wysing anagama for November. I'll be getting the wood down there for that firing in July some time.

And they all come to life when we're not looking

So, I think the firing went very well. I was able to unbrick the door on Tuesday evening and we unpacked on Wednesday afternoon. Really good, plenty of heat and reduction (even down the side stoke side of the kiln which can be slightly more oxidised). We had very few losses. A couple of pieces which had moved a little and stuck to others but in the grand scheme of things not much really. I've now had a chance to live with the pots for a while and I'm very pleased with the results. The very course clay which I mixed, flashes wonderfully in all parts of the kiln and receives the fly ash well. The shino glaze which had its first anagama testing on a few pieces in the last firing is great beautiful ice whites with pinks and oranges burning through in places. Works really well with the clay body as well. I still have a bit of grinding left to do just to remove the last traces of wadding and then I shall start to put together my stand for Earth and fire at the end of june. My exhibition at the Galanthus gallery ends this weekend so I'll be off down there soon to collect any unsold work. I'll keep updating as my exhibition stand for the summer takes shape. Whooop! Some pics.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZB_bwwRGzk0/TdYyhcF81CI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/pWf4Xq4EwPA/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I've got home and had a great hot bath, washed off the grime of 4 days in the yard, all the nervousness and anxiety from the preparation for the firing is gone and it's time to reflect a little on the firing. It went very well I think, and apart from the appearance of a random 29th birthday party at 2am Sunday morning complete with chocolate cake (which was very good), and Steve and I inadvertantly getting involved in a fashion photo shoot this morning, went very smoothly. We had cone 12 (1300 C (ish), over at the back early on Saturday morning with all the front cones over, bar the cone 15 (1420 C (ish). We ended today with just a bend on the cone 15. The kiln was pretty relentless and didn't leave us much time for rests between stokes but, looking through the door before we clammed it up this afternoon the contents inside looked very glassy with plenty of runs visible. The kiln responded really well throughout the firing to small adjustments that we made. I still have a slight sadness that this was the last firing, as it has been a great litttle kiln, having said this, after we had clammed the kiln up we went to have a look at the new kiln site. I'm looking forward to buiding and firing it.
A big thanks go out to James for his help with stacking the last of the wood stacks, and Deb for a good days side stoking hardwood slats yesterday. We will be opening the kiln on Wednesday afternoon so now three days of speculation and antisipation.

The team:

Steve resting his back and explaining to James how the barrow should be filled

The kiln reducing just after a large stoke:

and a tantilising view of one of my large vases through the flames

Will post the results after the opening.

The firing is underway!

Well after a 10hr pack yesterday, followed by pizza and wine we bricked up the wicket and lit the fire this morning at about 9am. It has been kept small at the front of the grate until about 3 this afternoon feeding through the lower firemouth, and we are now starting to feed through the upper firemouth as well. The pyrometer which I've stuck in the top blow hole is now reading about 400 C

Fire is building well still have the lower stoke hole open, but filling it with wood to burn down and form a cross hatch with the wood being dropped through the top firemouth. I've delivered all work to galleries and the Ceramics in Charnwood event held in Loughborough town centre on Sunday was a great success with plenty of interested visitors looking over the diverse ceramics on show.
I spent Monday and Tuesday chain sawing wood in the wind. How does so much saw dust end up in my socks??? The yard is now full with another pallet of wood to be cut up on Saturday when there is room. The kiln has been cleaned out and the grate fitted ready for the start of packing. Steve Parry is coming up tomorrow to help with the packing and firing and we will light the kiln on Friday morning and fire through to Sunday evening. This will probably be the last firing of this kiln as I am dismanteling it in the Autmun and rebuilding a slightly larger one. So, a bit sweet and sour, it's a good kiln but I'm striving for more diverse zones in a firing and the new kiln should give me those.

All my work to go into this firing has been glazed. I am using more shino in this firing than I have for a while. I have a couple of large bowls which I am particularly excited about seeing. The new bulbous bottles have my titanium ash glaze applied and I'm looking forward to seeing haow they come out.

I'll be updating this blog through the firing to keep a track of how it's going.

It's been a while but.....................

It's roughly a month now until my next firing. Pretty much all the work has been made and is now bisc and stacked on tables ready for glazing. Just a few more mugs and shot cups to make as well as as some setters for the larger pieces which will be side fired. Most of these pieces will have a shino glaze applied to the interiors. The exteriors will be left naked for the flame and ash to decorate. With all the good weather we have had recently the wood stacks are nice and dry. I'm just hoping that there arn't too many wasps in there as I've seen quite alot of dozey ones coming out of hibernation looking for a good spot to start a nest. I've been travelling around delivering work to several galleries over the past couple of weeks. The Galanthus Gallery near Hereford have a show on soon and also the SCA gallery in Shrewsbury. I also have to take work to the Beetroot Tree gallery in Derbyshire next week. The following week I am taking part in a local ceramic event in Loughborough town centre, so will need to select the work for that and also dust down my display units. The week after that will be wood cutting in preparation for the firing. I've taken a few pictures of the bisc work stacked high and have also made another "making" video of how I make one of my small course clay jars. Hope you enjoy them.

And the video. However, now all the course grogged clay which I made a few weeks ago has been wedged and bagged and I've now started to make again. This clay will be used for some medium paddled jars, large and small bowls and a couple of platters. I've now had the chance to start on the jars.

I've sorted out my next firing dates which will be packing on the 12th May and firing 13th - 15th. Freinds Steve Parry and Drew Lawes will be coming over to help with the firing. Saddly my faithful chain saw died a coupple of weeks ago beyon reasonable repair so I'll need to get a new one before the next firing as there will be a lot of fuel to cut prior to it. The porcelain in the blunger is now ready to start putting out on to plaster and bagging up ready to start making mugs and shot cups. That's one of next weeks jobs

I have clay!

I've managed to mix up my new batches of clay this week. 300kg of high flux porcelain in the blunger and 100kg of heavily grogged body in the dough mixer.

Heavily grogged boddy in the doughmixer. I've just added a couple of handfulls of pink granite grit from the local Mountsorrel quarry and two of white feldspar, topped off with 7 kg of 1 -3mm corderite grog.

The blunger which I mix the porcealin in is a bit rusty, the little rust which falls in, adds some interesting iron giving some lovely results in the kiln. I'll mix the clays for a couple of days more and then start the epic job of wedging and bagging up. I don't use a pug mill so it will take me a couple of days to get the grogged body wedged (around teaching). The porcelain will be fine sitting in the blunger and I'll just keep putting it out on plaster and wedgeing until I have enough to make the work I want. I've now got two dates in mind for the next firing; either the last week of April or the first week of May. It seems along time off but I know it'll come around quickly.
I had a bit of bad news today in that my trusty chainsaw has finally died. It's lasted me 12 years cutting wood for firings. I'll have to get a new one before April.

Throwing a composite vase

I did a bit of filming today and managed to put together a sequence showing the throwing of a soft thrown composite vase. I've been using up the last of the course clay which I made up. I'm liking what's coming out from this, working with the clay soft and using vigorous mark making. Utilizing the material and textures it produces.
Over the next couple of weeks i'll be having a big session of clay mixing. I'll be making up another load of this course clay which I'm loving (although it's a bit abrasive on the hands after a while). It has a fantastic clay quality and fires beutifully, with great colour generation and the felspar and mounsorrel granite giving some good bleed throughs. I also need to mix up another large batch of 'porclain'. I put it in quote marks because I mix it up in a slightly rusty blunger so it gets adulterated by lumps of rust. Once I've made up my clays I'll try and leave it for a month before using, to let it settle down (although I have been known to throw it straight from the mixer), if I get impatient.
I also need to make up a new batch of ash glaze. I kept all the ash from the firebox of the last firing and will first sieve it to get rid of all the large pieces of rubbish. I don't wash it so I'll mix it straight into the other glaze materials and then sieve the whole lot through an 80's sieve. I'm also writing up the testing which I carried out in the summer in to crackle shino glazes which I've started using on a few pieces. I'll publish these on the web site in the near future. http://www.ben-brierley-woodfired-ceramics.co.uk/
It's blowing a hooley outside and I have to keep an eye on the tarps covering the wood stack as they keep coming loose and flapping around all over the place. Trying to grapple big sheets of tarp in 50mph gusts is hard enough, let alone trying to thread the ropes through the rappidly diminishing number of eyelets.

Just finished a firing

Well, first post. Here we go. I finished my last firing 2 weeks ago. Really pleased with the results. Got cone 15 bending at the front and 12 flat at the back so nothing underfired. The new clay bodies I am testing worked well and I'm now looking forward to using the for making work for the next firing which will be April time. Good time of year to fire. Spring in the air and the nights not as long. I'm working on some new pieces for this next firing for a couple of exhibitions which I have coming up and I'll post some pics of these soon. Above are a couple of pieces I like alot from the firing. New clay body with really course corderite grog, feldspar and Mountsorrel granite with a new shino I've working on as a liner.
